INTERNET ACCESS SOLUTIONS
SCSIs SkyNet High-Speed Internet Access by Satellite
Satellite Communication Systems, Inc. (SCSI) offers four access solutions which enable high-speed Internet access without needing a highly developed terrestrial infrastructure. The one-way and two-way satellite terminals provide high-speed access from the Internet for a single user or organizational network. These terminals are also capable of providing access to corporate Intranets that are spread out over multiple countries. We also offer dedicated satellite links for backbone access to ISPs as well as Integrated Satellite Business Network (ISBN) services for voice, data, and video applications.
A major obstacle to high-speed access to the Internet has been the inherent cost of high-bandwidth dedicated links. Often a trade-off is made because of cost and lower-bandwidth links are used. The SkyNet one-way and two-way satellite terminals use a very cost effective "asymmetrical" transmission technique for retrieving data from the Internet. Most Internet activities do not require high-speed data service in both directions. The SkyNet terminals employ a medium-speed connection to the internet and a high-speed connection from the Internet. This reduces costs and provides a premium service.
The SkyNet Two-Way Satellite Terminal:
The SkyNet two-way satellite is a full-duplex VSAT Internet Terminal which provides high-speed connectivity from the Internet. The terminal uplinks directly to the satellite to provide access to the Internet at up to 2048 Kbps. The SkyNet two-way terminal does not require any telephone lines to the Internet. It provides the same high (or higher, if required) performance and connectivity from the Internet that is associated with the SkyNet one-way satellite terminal. (See below.)
Operation of the SkyNet two-way terminal requires appropriate transmitting licenses from national regulation authorities. Potential customers should educate themselves regarding licensing procedures for their country and obtain the appropriate licenses. SkyNet has a growing database of contracts and specific regulations for different countries and is prepared to assist customers in the acquisition of the necessary national authorization.
The SkyNet One-Way Satellite Terminal:
The SkyNet one-way satellite terminal is a two-way Internet access system with a 2048 Kpbs connection from the Internet. It uses a dedicated connection to a local ISP (Internet Service Provider) to access and send requests to the Internet. This product consists of an access kit which is interfaced with a PC. This kit includes an antenna with LNB (as small as 2.4 meters), an antenna interface cable, a cisco router, and a Windows 95-based computer.
ISP Access Solution:
Internet Service Providers in many regions of the world are finding that quality high-speed Internet circuits are very difficult (if not impossible) to obtain, are sometimes unreliable, and are usually very expensive. Satellite connectivity to the Internet provides an attractive alternative. The satellite can provide a dedicated circuit directly to the US Internet backbone and completely bypass the under-developed infrastructure.
SCSI recommends dedicated one-way or two-way high-speed satellite terminals for this application. These systems use state-of-the-art, highly integrated subsystems which give customers flexibility and reliability. They are designed to provide dedicated connections to the Internet, ranging in bandwidths from 64Kbps to 2Mbps. These links connect a remote site to the Internet backbone. This enables an ISP to provide service to small or large numbers of potential dial-up users.
